Electric Power Assisted Steering - EPAS

Electric Power Steering Systems “EPAS” is becoming more common on Current Road and Race Cars throughout the world.

There are basically only 2 different types of Electric Power Steering Systems.

  1.  Electric Pump over Hydraulic Rack or Box
  2.  Full Electric Power Steering Rack or Electric Power Steering Column.

So what is in both of the systems and how does each system function?

System 1 “Electric Pump over Hydraulic Rack or Box”

In this system the vehicle has an Electric Power Steering Pump driven from the vehicles 12V battery. In this system the vehicle also must have a Hydraulic Power Steering Rack or Hydraulic Power Steering Box.

The Electric Power Steering Pump is driven off the vehicles 12V power supply and the oil Pressure and flow that the pump produces is used in the conventional Hydraulic Power Steering Rack or Hydraulic Power Steering Box in the normal manner as any Hydraulic Power Steering system would function.

We have a universal Electric Power Steering Pump Kit that can be used in different applications.

System 2 “Full Electric Power Steering Rack or Column”

In this system the vehicle can have either an “Electric Power Steering Column” or an “Electric Power Steering Rack”.

In a system with an “Electric Power Steering Column” the vehicle must have a Manual Steering unit and an “Electric Power Steering Column” this Electric Column has an Electric Motor attached to the Column this Electric Motor in the column then drives the Manual Steering Unit this is done electrically via the vehicles Electronic Control Unit. So in this type of Steering System the vehicle must have 2 main components to function. (I.e. an Electric Column and a Manual Steering Unit.)

In a system with an “Electric Power Steering Rack” the vehicle must have an “Electric Power Steering Rack” The Electric Power Steering rack has an electric motor attached to the rack, the motor then drives the steering rack via the vehicles Electronic Control Unit.
So in this type of Steering System the vehicle has only one main component to function. (I.e. an Electric Power Steering Rack”)

We have a range of universal Electric Power Steering Column Kit’s that can be used in different applications.
